RNLI Open 2009
The day dawned with howling winds, rain and cold conditions and there didn't appear to be much prospect of sailing, let alone competing. However this being Sutton Bingham meant that the prevailing conditioning around the country could not be taken as gospel for the conditions at the lake. The first race was a warm up for the main event, the pursuit in the afternoon and 6 boats managed to summon the enthusiam to race once the sun had come out. In parts it was only a force 3 and Simon Hawkes (Phantom) from Chew Valley romped away in the manageable conditions to secure the win that suggested he would retain the main trophy in the afternoon race. Ian Jay (Phantom) took second despite a capsize. In fact Phantoms filled the top places.

The winner of the pursuit race - Ian Jay
The wind had increased dramatically for the pursuit and with the competitors agreement the race was shortened to a half pursuit, though the 50 minutes for the Phantoms looked like hard work. The Laser 4.7 of Rob Dyer set off in goos style and retained his lead for half of the race. Jenn Botterill's Laser Radial had problems with the outhaul meaing that she would catch Rob until 5 minutes to go. Hawkes and Jay battled it out behind, but with Hawkes outhaul breaking meant that Jay could escape. Luckily Hawkes was very close to the landing area by the club and popped in for repairs before chasing down the Lasers. The wind dropped off to a nice 2-3 with the odd hairy moment but of course this just paid into the hands of the Phantoms. Jay still maintained the gap over Hawkes who had just nudged in front of the two Lasers prior to the end. It was the battle between Dyer and Botterill that caught the imagination of the spectators. |

The annual open meeting in aid of the RNLI takes place on November 22nd. There are two races, a handicap race in the morning followed by a pursuit in the afternoon. Entry is by donation to the RNLI. There should also be a stall manned by volunteers of the RNLI to sell various gifts and Christmas odds & ends, so if you need a calendar or diary for next year, or just need some of the excellent RNLI Christmas cards please come along. Can anyone break the dominance of the Phantoms? |
