Adult Training

The start sailing courses are held in the spring and autumn each year; it is over five weekend days and covers the RYA level 1 and 2 start sailing courses. The dates are organised nearer the time. To enrol on a course please click on the link.

At the end of the course you will be able to sail a dinghy in light to medium wind strengths on inland water, rig, launch, sail a course, practise capsizing and recover a sailing dinghy. Also covered is a basic knowledge of related sailing subjects. The instructors are club members who are qualified RYA dinghy instructors or experienced club members. The course is run by a RYA senior dinghy instructor. On successful completion you will be able sail a dinghy safely either has helm or crew.

Youth Sailing Courses 2010

Following the success of last year’s courses, the customary RYA Young Sailors Scheme sailing courses will again be running during the summer holidays of 2010. These are 3 day courses offering the full range of RYA courses to under 16’s. Additionally this year there will be the introduction of a SBSC Advanced Sailing Course; designed to provide those that have completed their stage 4 with extra skills and an introduction to racing.

Sutton Bingham SC offers an idyllic environment for children to learn to sail. Last year saw 118 youths achieve their next level in the syllabus. The enclosed nature of the sailing area along with the variety of dinghies, safety boats and equipment means that all those taking part can have fun and learn in the knowledge that they are safe. The clubhouse provides teaching areas, changing facilities, a galley service and stunning views over the reservoir and activities afloat. All instructors are fully qualified, excellent sailors as well as being friendly and positive individuals.

I myself am a RYA Senior Instructor, Powerboat Instructor, and Windsurfing Instructor and will hopefully be graduating from Applied Marine Sports Science (BSc) at the University of Plymouth this year. This will be the third year that I have run these courses at the club and I am keen to see them continue to grow. My other experience has included seasonal work at the Island Cruising Club (Salcombe) and I am currently a Senior Instructor for both the Mount Batten Centre and Plymouth Youth Sailing in Plymouth.

RYA Young Sailors Scheme(Stages 1-4 only)

These courses have been hugely popular in previous years, and I am keen to ensure that this continues. The plan is to run 4 courses over the summer holidays. These are open to 8 – 16 year old children and both members and non-members with a maximum capacity of 24 children per course. As always we encourage both experienced sailors looking to progress/consolidate skills and those who may be new to the sport – everyone is welcome.

For those that are currently non-members, the course costs now include 1 years Cadet Membership at Sutton Bingham Sailing Club; giving the students an opportunity to continue using the club and equipment after the course. Please simply return a completed membership application form (available below) along with your course booking forms.
