We welcome almost any dinghy at SBSC, as long as it has a current Portsmouth Yardstick. However, those not recognised by the RYA may be accepted after application to the committee. Current favourites in the racing fraternity are Phantoms, Lasers and Solos, though they all race in a mixed handicap race.
Sailing is possible from Wednesdays through to Sundays all year round. The only restriction is that there must be rescue cover whenever anyone is sailing. This rescue cover is provided by the members on Saturdays & Sundays only. At all other times it must be run by those sailing. The club runs 3 races on Sundays, starting at 11.00am (all year round). There is also a Thursday evening series starting at 6.30pm in the summer. We also hold open meetings for various classes & handicap opens, including a pursuit race in aid of the RNLI. We have also held inland national championships for the smaller classes. Although SBSC runs races, a large section of our members are casual sailors. We like to see them and encourage them. These casual sailors get together with the racers during the year for informal sailing get together at places such as Falmouth & Weymouth. Part of the club's activities are to encourage corporate groups such as the handicap sailors, scouts, guides and the navy to sail. We have facilities for the disabled, including safe pontoon access to the water, and the use of a Raider 18 keelboat. In the summer we host (with the fishermen & Wessex Water) a 'Disabled Day', where we can cater for up to 300 people. Thats just a little about the club's sailing activities, so here a snippet about the rest of the club. The club house has a good view of the sailing area, and it's galley serves food and drinks on Sundays. The race office is elevated from the rest of the club house, and the rescue officers can see the whole lake clearly. Sutton Bingham reservoir was built over 4 years in the early 1950's at a cost of £1m. The reservoir is 142 acres and T-shaped. The most southerly tip of the lake is a nature reserve, and a site of national importance, being the home of wildfowl and migrant birds. Since it's early days, it has also become the home for fishermen, and most importantly to us, Sutton Bingham SC. In the formative years, the club was primarily a racing club, with large fleets of 420's, Marauders, Lasers, Solos, Toppers & Mirrors. |
