We also won Top Club at Chew where a member of our team, she shall remain anonymous, was nicknamed “the destroyer” by the opposition. Congratulations and thanks to all that took part.

Individual achievements of note include; Howard Frear’s impressive stack of wins which nabbed him the Top Helm Award, Chris Jones’s Comet Association and National Championship wins in a borrowed boat, Rob Dyer’s second successive Club Championship win, Tim Robertson and Saffron Gallagher winning the Wanderer Inland Championships, Max Robertson who won the Mini Mole and Top Junior award – he looks a bit handy in a Laser too, Andrew Frost
won our Laser Open as well as Chew’s Aero 5 Open with Chris Jones coming 2nd in the Aero 7 class and Kelsey Green deservedly won the coveted Annual Improvement. Congratulations
to everybody who achieved success this year, whether winning trophies, learning new stuff or perhaps getting on the water for the first time.

Sailcom ran a comprehensive set of events under Lou Hart and Chris Jones’s leadership.

Turnouts have been good across each race series and the Thursday Series ran smoothly thanks to Nigel Leveridge and Julia Green. Inter-club events were particularly popular and
attendance at Opens was up thanks to Chris’s marketing efforts. His skills were also in evidence for the PushThe Boat Out event attracting almost 200 people for taster sessions which were run
by a small, enthusiastic but very overworked group of volunteers.

David Thomson took on the Training mantle from Mike Burke and worked exceptionally hard with his team to deliver a superb programme. The RYA inspection was passed with flying colours, new instructors were recruited and trained, a new food delivery service was well received and new financial analysis will help to ensure future viability. In future, the Training Centre will assume responsibility for the club dinghies and their upkeep with the aid of a paid Bosun. A new training pathway is being developed to take new members from taster session through to regular sailing or racing.

The training team also aims to take on the Youth and Junior Sailing Training from Mark Talbot. Mark has run his scheme for 13 years supported by Chris Hutton, both of whom are now calling it a
day. This was a huge investment of their precious time and energy, not just running the sessions but in organising, nurturing instructors, guiding parents and preparing and

maintaining the boats. Their enthusiastic teamwork and fun oriented events inspired many youngsters to revel in club racing and even to challenge to be the best racers in the country. On behalf of the club, thank you Mark and Chris.

Chris Jones ran a very successful race training series at the club this year and has kindly donated part of the proceeds to buy new equipment for our Lasers. Training is such an important aspect of the club and it’s comforting to know that it’s in such capable hands.

Richard Frost hosted several Tera training sessions at the club with participants from the Teignmouth and Torbay areas and instructors from Weymouth. Our own Cadets were free to join in to benefit from the experience and this is set to be repeated in the coming year.

Our cruising expeditions have grown. An eleven strong contingent lead by Alan Chinn went on the Falmouth Weekend Cruise and had a wonderful time. Six members, led by Mike Burke, cruised from Lymington to the Folly Inn on the Isle of Wight and back. Everyone certainly seems to relish these adventures.

Paul Wilson continued his great work with Wessex Water’s Raider, taking the Apollo Swimming Group out on Thursday summer evenings and also hosting six children from the Chernobyl disaster area. This community work is an extremely good reflection on the club.

On the Operational side of the Club Merv Clark has almost finished the Lease negotiations after years of exceptionally hard work. He’s also been progressing the development plan as far as the negotiations have allowed. Merv certainly earned the “Clubman of the year” award.

Membership numbers are better than expected at 175. The slight downward trend and the a progressively more “mature” membership has continued in line with other clubs. Our priority is to boost membership and whilst the hard work on PTBO didn’t deliver many new members it did demonstrate the power of excellent marketing by Chris Jones. Chris has also massively raised the profile of the club in the local newspapers and via Yachts and Yachting In fact the Committee has asked him to propose a costed marketing plan for the club.

Health and Safety is always a popular subject and one of the Committee’s most serious concerns. Under Jim Withers’ analytical and thorough approach we’ve seen some big strides taken to establish an effective management system and to mitigate our risks.

Another equally popular and important job is the Duty Roster. Howard Frear’s mastery of “Dutyman” system meant that “no shows” were incredibly rare. We also learned to apply a July cut-off
date for entering duties and then to allocate the remainder. This wasn’t universally popular but necessary to ensure that all members were treated fairly.

Hugh Tetlow has, once again, been a stalwart of the club with his careful stewardship of the Galley and his willingness to tackle any job around the club.

Nigel Leveridge continued to apply his trusted eagle eye to the cash accounts as our Treasurer.

Phil Godfrey’s expertise and organisation as Secretary have been a godsend to the Committee keeping us on the straight and narrow.

The Committee is also extremely grateful to Ian Jay for building and running a replacement website. This has saved the club the very considerable expense of a commercial solution. It is work in progress with Chris Jones kindly coordinating the input.

Finally – thank you to every club member for your support during my tenure as Commodore and a special thanks those who contributed to the running of the club in whatever capacity.
Massive thanks to all the Committee Members for your guidance, support and for putting up with me. I wish the new Commodore and the new Committee every success.

Full proceedings from the AGM held on Wednesday 9 November will be reported in the next newsletter, however, the report from our outgoing Commodore, Andy Roxburgh, gives a very good overview of club activities and achievements over the year… We trumped the opposition in the home leg of the Banbury Chaser and the Triangle Cup […]

[5

post-690","post","type-post","status-publish","format-quote","hentry","category-news","post_format-post-format-quote
["GET
